I frequently attend local business networking events, both to learn about others’ business interests and just to get to know people at a deeper level than just over a phone. I’ve gotten to know many local business leaders and entrepreneurs, both in the Hawaii real estate industry and in countless other ventures. And just about every single one is a class character act. We have a treasure trove of quality movers and shakers here in our island home.
But people are people and there will always be that one bad seed, even here in the land of sunshine and surf.
I urge anyone about to pursue a financial business venture with someone, such as a joint partnership or working with a professional to process a short sale of your house or anything in between, to run a background check on that person.
Do they have any judgments against them? A lis pendens? Bankruptcy? Prior convictions? An online search or quick visit to City Hall will tell you – the information’s quite easy to find.
If someone approached you about helping you with a foreclosure or short sale solution but you find they have a judgment or lis pendens against them for other real estate transactions, would you trust them with your financial future? I wouldn’t, either.
On the flip side, do they have quality referrals? A generally helpful air about them? Do they listen more than they talk? Meet them in person, get to know them and see what your instincts tell you.
Integrity, in both business and life, is a vital character trait. Make you only work with people who show it everyday.
