Beware of Standing Water…

image of a building of the Mu Ryang Sa Korean Buddhist Temple in Palolo, OahuI just got back from deep in Palolo Valley. By the way, did you know there’s a beautiful Korean Buddhist temple back there?? When did this happen? Take Waiomao Rd to the end — stunning!

Anyway, where was I? Right — standing water. So as I was wandering the grounds under the watchful eye of the Buddha, I noticed that I wan’t alone. No, there were no monks, worshippers or caretakers. I was welcomed by a family — make that a family gathering — of mosquitoes. So as I sit here covered in itchy red bumps, I thought I’d write this post.

With all the rainstorms we’ve had here in the past week — can someone build me an ark? — you might want to check your lawn or birdbaths for pools of water. You don’t want to provide any breeding grounds for those bloodsuckers. Of course, it’s a different scenario if you live back in a valley like Palolo or Niu than if you live in drier areas like Salt Lake or Ewa Beach.

Of course, it’s not just about serving as a tasty meal for those flying buggers (pass the hydrocortisone, please). You also want to keep that water away from the foundation of your house. This is a good time to make sure your gutters are working properly and channel that water at least a couple feet away. Over time, water can be one of the most erosive forces on the planet so don’t let it attack the stability of your house. A sidewalk perimeter around your house can also act as a water barrier — and can look quite nice as well.
